Microlearning in the Workplace

WHAT IS MICROLEARNING AND HOW DOES IT SHAPE WORKPLACE TRAININGS?

Which would you prefer?

A lengthy training, as in hours long, sitting and listening to one person talk a majority of the time about many concepts, your legs go numb and your mind begins to wander OR a training that can be completed within a few minutes, focused on one specific skill, and can be done just about anywhere?

Microlearning is just that. A more modern take to training that delivers information to learners in small, focused sections that can be completed within a few minutes and be accessed anytime and anywhere. This type of learning allows for learners to be able to grasp a concept, retain the information, and apply the knowledge immediately. Learners are also able to return to the materials as needed based on their personal learning pace (Kannan, 2024). With many workplaces working at various speeds and full of diverse employees, microlearning can reach just about everyone’s learning needs.

The workplace training experience I created, Mastering Time Management with the  2-Minute Rule, can be considered a microlearning experience. This training consists of a short, 2-5 minute eLearning video that informs learners of a simple and efficient tool that can be applied to boost productivity in any workplace. The 2-Minute Rule can be defined as completing any task that takes less than two minutes right away. This module can be accessed on any device, provides interactive examples, and ends with a quick self-assessment for learners to reinforce their understanding of the concept.

By focusing this training on a single skill and assuring the content is to the point, this training aligns with all the features of microlearning. It is brief, relevant to the workplace, and accessible. Employees are able to immediately apply this rule in their every day routines, implementing what has been learned. This training can strengthen engagement and retention but can also give employees a sense of empowerment when making small and meaningful changes that have a strong professional impact.
